Surfing –This pristine corner of Costa Rica is world-renowned for providing the most consistent year-round waves in the country. The most popular surf spot is Playa Guiones – only a beach walk away from Refugio Del Sol. The waves here range from head-high to double overhead and Guiones is much less crowded than Tamarindo. Both beginner and Expert surfers can appreciate the quality of the surf here. Playa Pelada is also home to a left point break and is good for surfing most of the year for those with more experience. Refugio Del Sol offers private surfing and board rental.  Learn more about the Costa Rica surf experience at InnocentSurfSchool.com and SurfingNosara.com.

Students and teachers can come to the institute to learn advanced principles in yoga. There are a wide variety of yoga instructors and classes throughout the area for you to enjoy. Private Yoga instruction is also available at Refugio Del Sol, just ask one of our staff members to make you an appointment.

Sport Fishing – There is no better place to sport fish in Costa Rica than the Nosara area, due to the 100-fathom ledge bending in towards the beach. This brings the blue water and its fish close to the beach, plus, the blue water fish species are in the area for most of the year. The following species are abundant in Nosara: Sailfish, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Snook, Striped Marlin, Cuberra Snapper, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado/Mahi-Mahi, Bonita, Rooster Fish and Pago Snapper. Refugio Del Sol can help customize and arrange a sport fishing package to meet your needs. When your fishing trip yeilds “the big one,” our El Fenix restaurant chefs will cut and prepare it to your specifications.

Canopy Tours – Nosara’s Miss Sky Canopy Tour boasts the longest canopy tour in the world and is also the only zip line where you emerge from a pristine forest, cross high above the beautiful river Nosara and descend into a 5th floor disco-bar atop a spectacular building. The zip line is a must-do activity for adventurers and nature lovers. Refugio Del Sol can help you arrange your canopy tour while you are here.

Horseback Riding – Ride a beautiful horse across rivers, jungle paths, hidden waterfalls, and along dreamlike beaches. Experience the tropical rain and dry forest along the Pacific coast. There are a variety of horseback riding stables in the area and we would be happy to assist you with finding the package right for you.

beach-birdsBird Watching – Your initial bird watching experience in Nosara begins when you step outside your door. There are over 200 species of birds in Nosara, including numerous species of shore birds, raptors, wrens, flycatchers and many tropical birds such as toucans and parrots. One of the best places to go bird-watching is the Reserva Biologica Nosara, a private nature-reserve that is 50 hectares (125 acres) along the Nosara River. It is home to many varieties of plant species, mangroves and wildlife, such as monkeys, coatis, raccoons, armadillos, snakes, anteaters, crabs, iguanas and others.

Sea Turtles – Several times a year female turtles come ashore in such record numbers that the beach resembles a stretch of rocky coastline. These mass nesting episodes (lasting from 2 to 8 days) are locally referred to as “arribada,” or arrival. After an undetermined waiting time, close to the last quarter of the moon cycle, the “arribada” will begin. At first, a few hundred turtles will come out on the beach, followed by a steady stream of animals for the next three to seven days. Although you can see some turtles arrive at on Playa Guiones, the real show is on Ostional Beach, which is also home to the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge.  July through November is the peak nesting season, and it’s a unique sight to watch these turtles bump and crawl all over each other on their way to fulfill their task, to lay their eggs at all cost.

Weddings – Refugio Del Sol is the perfect setting to say “I do” to that special someone. Couples can choose to say their vows in our tropical garden or on Pelada Beach in front of the crashing waves.
